Introducing HOME PLANET: The Future We Choose

At SAIL, we are passionate about the significant value that the creative industries can play in effectively communicating climate change in innovative, engaging forms. In 2022, as part of the XR Stories Climate Change Challenge R&D project, working in collaboration with technical partner Megaverse, and an advisory group of industry experts and relevant academics, we had the opportunity to test our concept and embed best practice on climate communications in an immersive tech format.

In 2022, as part of the XR Stories Climate Change Challenge R&D project, working in collaboration with technical partner Megaverse, and an advisory group of industry experts and relevant academics, we had the opportunity to test our concept and embed best practice on climate communications in an immersive tech format.

Through the R&D project, we developed ‘Zone 3: The Future We Choose’, which forms one zone of ‘Home Planet’, our larger vision piece of a multi-zonal climate education experience. Zone 3 blends eXtended Reality (XR) and creative storytelling, backed by evidence-led research to create an interactive VR experience that explores the potential impacts of flooding in Hull.

Throughout this project, we worked with Alexandra Dales and Gemma Bridge from York St John University, and Rory Padfield from the University of Leeds, contributing to their research and development of a framework for creating effective sustainability stories.

At the end of January, we had the pleasure of showcasing our Immersive Climate Education experience at the XR Stories Green Screens showcase.

We hope in the future to continue developing our idea for the multi-zonal experience of Home Planet, experimenting with different technologies and processes, and testing the best forms of communication for creating engaging storytelling that motivates action.
