About Us

We help the creative and cultural industries get to grips with sustainability in a way that’s practical, evidence-based, and rooted in how the sector actually works.
From carbon literacy training to full strategic support, our work is about building long-term resilience, cutting through the noise, and helping organisations make real progress, whether you’re just starting out or already well underway.
Our story
SAIL began in 2018, when two practitioners, Jamie from the world of opera, and Phil from TV and film, came together with the realisation that no matter the artform, the sustainability challenges were the same.
What started as a local network quickly became something more. It was clear that while peer support was valuable, it wasn’t enough. Change wasn’t going to come for the sector, we’d need to make it happen. That’s how SAIL was born, an organisation set up by and for the creative and cultural industries to take on sustainability challenges head on with practical support and sector-specific solutions.
The SAIL network
At the heart of SAIL is our membership network, a growing community of creative and cultural organisations committed to making real progress on sustainability.
With over 500 members across Yorkshire and beyond, the network is a space to share knowledge, test ideas, and support one another through events, working groups, and collaborative opportunities.
Through the network, members can:
- Access exclusive resources and tools
- Join regular meetups, working groups and workshops
- Share materials via our Resource Hub
- Take part in shaping how the sector responds to the climate crisis
It’s free to join!

The Resource Hub
SAIL are proud to have set up the regions first circularity hub, called The Resource Hub, a space where unwanted sets, props, costumes, equipment and materials from the creative and cultural industries are given a new life instead of ending up in a skip.
Community Energy Project
With support from the North East and Yorkshire Net Zero hub, SAIL are exploring a community energy project for the creative and cultural industries, the first of it’s kind in the world. This pioneering project will help organisations become more resilient by cutting cost, invest in renewable infrastructure and reduce our collective carbon impact.
