Leeds Light Night 2024
SAIL supported the Leeds City Council events and venues team to formulate an environmental policy aligned with the broader objectives of Leeds City Council, as well as the Eurocities’ call for a low carbon, inclusive culture. Building on this policy, SAIL worked with the team to develop a detailed sustainability action plan, translating the policy’s overarching goals into specific, actionable objectives, each backed by clear actions, designated responsibilities, and trackable metrics.

SAIL also carried out the carbon footprint analysis for Light Night 2024, a two-day arts and lights festival taking place across Leeds city centre. This encompassed data collection focusing on various aspects such as energy usage, transportation, waste management, and vendor operations, carbon footprint calculation, and the generation of a comprehensive report with recommendations for how to reduce the environmental impact of future events.
This partnership set a precedent in environmental accountability and data-driven decision-making for Leeds City Council’s events, as well as laying the groundwork for meeting future reporting requirements (such as to achieve the Arts Council England National Portfolio of Organisations status), ensuring the events team are well prepared and taking a proactive approach to meeting stakeholder and funding requirements.
