Pioneering Community Energy for the Creative Sector

Posted News

SAIL is thrilled to announce that we have secured funding from the North East & Yorkshire Net Zero Hub to explore a community energy model specifically designed for the creative and cultural industries.

We know that for our sector, utility bills continue to rise and many creative organisations are struggling to balance environmental sustainability with survival. We also know that creative organisations find it difficult, if not impossible to install renewables on their premises, as high up front costs, limited space, listed building status and the fact that many organisations don’t own their premises all hinder the possibility of taking control of our own power supply.

But what if there was another way?

SAIL are partnering with Opera North and energy consultants Scene to investigate what a community-owned renewable energy project would look like for our sector, and over the coming months we will be assessing the technical feasibility and ownership model of a large solar array owned by SAIL members. This will look to reduce our collective energy bills and potentially create a revenue stream which will support the sector with further decarbonisation efforts.

This project is a pioneering effort, as we believe it might be the first of its kind in the world.

In the coming months, we’ll be reaching out to our members for input and feedback to make this vision a reality. If you’d like to receive updates specifically about the project and potentially be a part of the working group driving this project, please sign up using this form.
